World Class Surfing Competition at St Mikes, South Coast

The Surfing paradise known as St Michael On Sea on the South Coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal did us proud. Local businesses, residents and a willing work force banded together to transform this iconic beach into a “Mini Florida” in preparation for a long anticipated Tidy Town South African Masters surfing Championships. This surfing event in St Mikes provided a much needed boost for the local businesses and for the tourist Industry in particular.

Over a period of three days, surfers battled each other in various wave conditions, from small to big to secure the prized titles on offer. The waves started off being small but on the last day surfers were taken out to the back line by a jet ski. It was a good test for the finalists and great for the spectators.

The cameras were out in full force. The live commentary was great, especially for spectators who are new to surfing competitions and don’t know the formats and procedures of the competition or don’t know the competitors. There were various food stalls and a beer garden for the competitors. There was a great vibe in tent as well as on the lawns and the beach.

C Bali restaurant was in a great location overlooking the event. We at Van Heerden Letting were honoured to be able to provide self catering holiday accommodation for many of the competitors.

In the over 35 year old division, Heather Clark from UGU “did it” for the ladies.  Gavin Roberts, also from UGU, took the crown in the over 35’s mens division. The sky is the limit when a community pulls together for the benefit of all. Well done to all.
