There is a special magic to the South Coast. Awoken to the gentle crash of the surf breaking over the rocks. The promise of another day in paradise stimulates the senses.

A fiery red ball rises over the mill pond sea, the promise of a new day, the promise of excitement and also adventure whilst on holiday. The fishermen patiently contemplate the ocean, waiting for that tug on the line, signalling a delicious fresh shad breakfast. The cape gannets cruise the backline, up and down, in and out, following the contour of the waves, searching for those elusive sardines. A sudden arrow point dive and success, a bombardment of catapulting birds harass the unseen delicacies.

I sit savouring a morning cup of tea, nectar in the warming rays of the sun, observing, watching, breathing in the peace and tranquillity. A large container ship glides along, breaking the flat horizon. The birds are busy with the task of finding the day’s food, the hadedah with a glint of mother of pearl on its iridescent wing, stabbing the lawn constantly looking for that tasty morsel. The red winged starlings swoop down, chasing the common mynahs from their turf, the common fiscal settles on the fence post like a lord surveying his estate. The hadedahs fly off with their caucus call heralding the new day, one of the beloved sounds of South Africa.

A spout of water shoots high into the sky, breaking the blue stillness of the ocean. The whales are crushing along on their journey north, a fin wave and a tall slap mapping out their path through the ocean. A pod of dolphins race along the back line, during the crest of the wave, joyous and free, as they chase the sardine ball.
